So I’m running around this evening and miss the first half of American Idol. I turn it on just in time to see Ryan welcoming the Rascal Flatts guys in the audience, camera cuts to them, they wave hello…show continues. Show ends. No big deal, right? So, I flip over to Dancing with the Stars, already in progress. And not five minutes later, there are the RF boys once again, performing live on stage this time. What gives – they cannot be live on the both shows at the same time! Am I crazy? Was I hallucinating? Am I just plain wrong that both of these shows air live?

yes! i saw that too! what the hell is going on here? last week it was paula getting “confused” and “imagining” that jason castro had sung twice when he hadn’t cause the show is “live”. and i’ve always thought that especially the results show of DWTS aren’t live because the voted off star of the night goes on jimmy kimmel later that night and i know that kimmel’s show is taped earlier in the day. hmmmm….not very good PR panning on the rascal flatts part.

I *think* the DWTS and Idol sound stages are right next to each other….thus explaining the ability of Rascal’s performances. HOWEVER…aren’t they on different networks? Hmm…I swear someone said that they were close because Paula watches DWTS after Idol? Or so they said on tv?

Good call Chelsea! The shows are on different networks, and if the sound stages are next to one another, it would make it feasible for the RF boys to be in the audience of Idol before performing on Dancing. Maybe they had some time to kill before Dancing began?

What the heck is going on! How could Rascal Flats be on Dancing With The Stars and American Idol at the time slot? Something isn’t sounding right – are they not on different networks?

I was wondering the same thing so I started searching. In 2006 it was reported that the performances were pre-recorded and then the audience would clap to an empty stage. The interviews however were live. But I am not sure if this is still true. I am so baffled by this.

I thought iI was the only one going crazy last night. Thankfully for once I was running late an recorded Idol. I left the tape running and was able to go back and see Ryan say hi to Rascal Flatts and then I was able to watch them sing live on Dancing with the Stars. It is just werid!

Although American Idol is on Fox and DWTS is on ABC, they originate from adjacent studios in the same building at yet another network – CBS TV City. Other shows shot there for other networks include Fox’s Don’t Forget The Lyrics, So You Think You Can Dance, Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader, and HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher. The first series of taping of NBC’s Deal or No Deal were also shot there as well as last year’s Grease competition. The studio that American Idol uses was also home to the Jerry Lewis telethon for ten years before it moved back to Las Vegas.
